A brief look into my healthy habits that you too can adopt!

Cha-Ching!

Healthy habits don’t have to be limited to only benefiting your health. “Healthy” is used loosely in the sense that it means anything that will help you! The number one, most important habit to develop is saving money! Saving your pennies and dimes for rainy day’s isn’t exactly where I’m going with this either, so don’t go busting out the piggy banks claiming you’re on the right track. Im talking about a serious investment or savings plan. One with important life goals in mind. Think about putting a percent of your income in an untouchable savings account, that when left untouched, over years develops interest. 10% always seemed like a good number to me. If you rake in $500 on your biweekly pay checks, put $50 in an account and “watch the money pile up” as Kanye West would say. Investing in companies or shares also can pay off if you’re wise about it. After all, you need to spend money to make money in this economy. I know more then anyone it’s hard, damn near impossible to not spend your pay checks on clothes, sushi, nails and hair. But I also know that by saving money since I got my first job at 14,  i was able to purchase a brand new car, and pay for university; as well as enjoying the finer things in life. Like designer jeans, and cactus club sunday lunches. Who DOESN’T want a cajun chicken sand which for lunch every sunday? Saving can make or break a person. You just need to know what you’re doing so you don’t end up being the person who breaks!

Take a De-Stress Day!

Stress is something we will never be able to rid completely. It will be in our lives everyday. Being over stressed however can cause many health problems including heart disease, stroke, high blood pressure, as well as immune and circulatory complications. Being  exposed to stress can also contribute to behaviours such as smoking, over-consumption of alcohol, and less-healthy eating habits. Statistics show that in 2011, 23.6% of Canadians aged 15 and older reported that most days were ‘extremely or quite a bit stressful,’ and increase from 22.3% in 2008. More specifically, females 25% reported that most days were quite a bit or extremely stressful, compared to men at 22.2%. So, WHAT ARE WE GUNNA DO?!

Well, I’ll fill you in. Take a day for YOU! Probably a day off from work is best, no need to call in sick! (don’t be lazy!) Hit the spa, go see a movie, nap and lounge all day! Whatever relieves you from everyday stresses. For me, that’s my evening runs. But on horrific, unbearable,  REALLY stressful days, a hot shower and my favourite pj’s will forever do the trick. It’s incredibly important for your mental and physically health to de-stress once in a while. Otherwise, we get wound up like rubber bands and eventually snap. And really, what purpose does a broken rubber band serve?

Lists!

This may not be a healthy habit necessarily, but it sure makes life one hundred times easier! I compulsively make lists. Lists for everything under the sun. To-do lists, grocery lists, homework lists, lists of workouts to try, lists of goals, really the list goes on and on! Being organized is critical in my life. I can’t always rely on my phone to remind me when birthdays or dentist appointments are, so I make post-it sticky note lists and post them everywhere! Inside text books, on the back of my front door, on my bathroom mirror, even on my ceiling to see before I fall asleep. Having visual reminds helps keep my brain in order. And when you have 50 odd things to do in a day, keeping your brain in order should be the least of your worries. Some people have told me it’s odd how frequently I make lists, but I think it’s odd that you don’t! I admire people who can have their great grey matter in a perfect filing cabinet formation. I however, cannot. Therefore, lists on lists on list.

No Excuses!

I cannot express my anger when people say they don’t have time to workout. Or they don’t have enough money for a gym membership. Or, my favourite, they don’t NEED to workout because they eat healthy. Im a full time high student, I volunteer my time with younger students five days a week, for two hours. I work 20 hours a week, and am taking my first year university at the same time. If I can make time to workout five days a week, so can you. Making up an excuse to skip the gym or pass up on a clear evening to jog is only harming you. No one else cares if you workout; but in ten years and a spare tire from now, you’ll care. I don’t mean to sound harsh, but it’s reality. You don’t need to go do dead lifts at a private gym to get a daily workout! Walk your dogs, go for a run, attend a palates class, go swimming! Anything to get your heart rate above your average beat. Heres some tips and tricks I’ve been keeping up my sleeve that might be able to help you out!

  • Keep a set of gym clothes, sneakers included, in your car. That way you’re ready to go where ever you may be!
  • Arrange to have a friend meet you for your workout. It’s harder to bail on yourself AND a friend at the same time.
  • Invest in a set of 5,10, or 15 pound weights and store them under your bed. When you get bored at home, instead of checking facebook 25 times, do some arm workouts.
  • Set a goal for yourself. Something you can achieve, but not too easily. Wether it be losing inches, pounds, or just being able to run an extra 1km every day, make it happen

 

 

You don’t need to spend 200$ a year to attend a gym to be fit. You also don’t need to be working out for four hours a day everyday. An hour and a half, a few times a week, is all you need!Image

Healthy Eating

The biggest portion of healthy life is healthy eating. Ever heard the saying 10% gym, 90% diet? Well, believe it or not its true! Most people i’ve come across say they don’t opt for healthier choices for two main reasons; time and energy. Reality check folks! It takes virtually no time to peel a banana in the morning, or grab an apple for you’re lunch instead of a candy bar. Pouring a glass of milk takes the exact same amount of time as a glass of high sugar juices or pop too. Given cooking healthy MEALS can be time consuming, it’s bound to take less time than what you’d need to burn off your McDouble at the gym. Which leads me into the second reason, energy. It doesn’t take nearly as much energy to cook chicken with whole grain rise and steamed spinach for supper, than it does to do sit-ups and crunches for 5 months. Choosing “fast food” is the laziest thing i have ever heard of. Come on people! Drive through windows, burgers made “fresh” for you in 3 and a half minutes.. sounds suspicious to me. I may be bias simply because I was raised on a strict healthy diet, but eating healthy is something we all need to pay more attention to.
